Warm Up Questions:
Share your name and answer this question:
Do you tend to be a rule-breaker or rule follower?
HEAD: These questions are meant to help us understand the passage, think deeply, and learn from one another. Encourage people to bounce ideas off each other, and allow moments of silence so everyone has time to think and respond.
Read Matthew 12:1-14. Did Jesus break the Sabbath?
What were the Pharisees focused on, and what was Jesus focused on?
What does it mean that God desires “mercy and not sacrifice” (v.7)?
Where might we treat a church tradition or personal expectation as though it were God’s command?
HEART: These questions help us understand our emotions, desires, and struggles so we can be known and loved by others while allowing the Lord to transform our hearts. Encourage everyone to share using “I” statements. Allow pauses and silence so people have space to reflect.
Are there ways you have elevated manmade traditions to the level of Scripture?
HANDS: These questions help us think practically about how we live out what we have learned from God’s Word.
What is one practical step that you want to take based on these verses?
