Why does Jesus speak in parables?

What is the seed and what do each of the different soils represent?

Can genuine followers of Jesus be represented by the bad soils, or do the bad soils represent only unbelievers?

If the bad soils represent unbelievers, why do genuine followers of Jesus often relate to the struggles described in those soils?
